Why so stupid?

Society asks you not to get into relationships,
Society tells you that if you get into relationships you’d get your heart broken,
You’d be broken and all that’ll be left of you would be tears and too many scars,
"Especially if he’s Yoruba", they say
"He’s not to be trusted if he’s Yoruba."
You listen not because you love following the crowd,
You listen because you are afraid,
Afraid to hurt like those other girls you see on Twitter,
Afraid to love someone who does not love you.

Fast forward to the present,
Two years after society dictated your relationship status,
It’s your birthday.
You’re twenty
Finally!
You’ve been waiting for this for so long
Waiting to finally be out of your teens and be a true adult.
It’s 12 A.M.
And society is upset with you
Upset that you’re not in a relationship and ready for marriage
Upset that you’ve taken so long to find a boyfriend
"You’re no longer a child! "
"What if you never find someone that can deal with you?"
"What if that boy you turned down two years ago is the actual one? Now he’s gone off and is dating Sade, what are you going to do? "
"Do you want to be a side chick all your life? "
"What took you so long?????"
You’re confused,
You’re troubled,
You do not understand,
"But you told me not to date!
That boy, his name is Femi, you said he was a Yoruba demon, you said he’d waste my time and break my heart, you said I was too young!"
"But it’s too late isn’t it?", They jeered.
"You’re going to die a spinster with twelve cats and all the men in the world would be better off without you.
It’s all your fault don’t try and blame us,
Don’t try to blame society we dint ask you to listen,
We dint ask you to be stupid,
Why so stupid?"
